Ride Description:

This section of route 191 known as the Coronado Trail Scenic Byway (formerly route 666) is regarded as one of the best motorcycle rides in the US. Per the FHA its also one of the curviest roads in the country with over 1000 turns, 400 switchbacks, and a 6000' elevation change from the Sonoran Desert to Alpine Meadows.

From the south starting at the SR78 junction head north to Clifton. Be sure to stop at the Clifton Circle K for fuel as this is the last gas stop prior to a 70 mile uphill ride. For those already looking for a break see the old business district off Chase Creek St.

Exiting Clifton you immediately pass a huge 2 mile wide mining operation. Continuing on you will ascend into the mountains through a series of hair pins and switchbacks with great high altitude and forest views. Proceed with caution as many parts of this route can be steep and some of the corners do not have guardrails. There are also no fences along the byway so watch for deer, elk, and other animals.

The next town is Alpine. Gas and food is available here. Lots of outdoor activities in the area and a good stopping point. Continue on another 30 miles as you descend out of the mountains into Springerville.

Per the FHA the estimated traffic along this route is about 100 cars daily. This has a tendency to increase during hunting season. Summer months are the best time of year to ride due to extreme weather in the higher elevations.

Peak altitude is just over 9000' near Alpine. Due to the altitude change be sure to bring appropriate riding gear. Carbureted bikes proceed with caution. Check weather prior to riding during early spring or late fall months.
