Ride Description:

This is the California Pacific Coast Hwy (PCH) / Hwy 1 From San Francisco north to Eureka / Humbolt Bay. This and the southern portion of the route are considered to be one of the most scenic roads in the country as almost the entire stretch travels along the California coastline.

This northern portion of the route is surprisingly rural taking you along coastal cliffs and passing through small towns along the way. Traffic can be slow moving due to tourists and people slowing down for the scenery, something riders should take caution of.

There are many points of interest along the way as well as turnouts and view points to stop at. Mendacino is nice stopping point with a great ocean access point on the west / coastal side of the town. Another must see the Avenue of the Giants / 101 bypass in Humboldt Redwoods State park (mapped) which is a 31 mile scenic route that parallels hwy 101.

Ride could easily be stretched into a 2+ day trip. Summer is the best climate for this route but the busiest. Gets cold in the winter + rainfall. But the scenery alone makes it one for the bucket list.
