Ride Description:

Good day ride through the Sierra Nevada Mountains north of Lake Tahoe. All kinds of road types to break up any monotony. Great scenery including canyons, forest, lake, river, and mountain views. Roads are in good shape (last I was there), just watch for the normal forest / mountain hazards including weather (this is where the Donner party went down).

Exit Reno north on the 95 the Hallelujah Junction. Shortly after ascending over the mountain turn left on the 49 in Viton. Here you cross open desert which shortly transitions into the Tahoe Forest. The 49 winds through the Sierras eventually curing south and joining the 20 in Nevada City, which is a good stopping point for this ride with places to look around. Continue east on the 20 where you eventually connect with the I80 just past Immigrant Gap. I80 will take you past Donner Lake, through Truckee (also a great stopping point) and eventually back down to Reno.

Watch for groves forming on some parts of I80 (mostly west towards the Sacramento side). This is a high altitude ride so dress accordingly and carbureted bikes beware. Also watch for animals and sand on the roads esp. during the spring.
