Good way to get out of town for a few hours.

Exit Chico hwy 32 east to hwy 36 that takes you to Lake Almanor around the north edge of the Lassen National Forest. Fuel / amenities on this route are scare so Chester, located on the north shore of the lake is a good stopping point.

Stay on the 89 around the SW shore of Lake Almanor then continue along the 70 at the junction just beyond Indian Falls which takes you over Lake Oroville and back down into the Valley to Chico.

Lots of great mountain and canyon scenery along this entire route including tunnels, waterfalls, and historical points of interest. Winters are harsh due to low temperatures, rain, and ice on the road. Deer are also common in this area so avoid riding in low light.
