Ride Description:
Route loops around SW Colorado through some of the most scenic parts of the Rocky Mountain Range. Ride takes you along the San Juan Mountains as well as various Canyons, National Parks, hot springs, and ski resorts.
Easy route to follow ... starting in Durango exit on route 160 west to Cortez. Take route 145 north to Placerville then route 62 to Ridgway. Take route 550 from Ridgway south back to Durango.
Route can be very technical with numerous altitude changes taking you up over 10,000' in 3 places, which may be problematic for carbureted bikes. Lots of switchbacks and hairpin turns as well as mountain roads with no guard rails so ride with caution.
Best time for this ride is July - August due to high altitude and snow cover. Lots of turnouts to stop at and great scenery along this route. There are also many historic points, mining towns, and other points of interest along the way so easily plan a full day for this ride if you plan on looking around.
